The time I started a Substack
Well here I am, on Substack. In the words of Richard Ayoade from Travel Man, "We are here. But should we have come?"
I've always enjoyed writing, but don't think I'd have a big enough attention span to stick to one topic for long enough to write a whole book or anything. Plus, I’m only really a writer in the same sense that I am a runner. I CAN write. I don’t do it very often, and I’m not particularly great at it, but I could get better if only I stick to it. So, I figured I'd give this whole Substack thing a go, and what better time than right now while I sit in the boot-seat of the car with the doggo, the family in the front, my youngest kiddo dressed as a bee, on our way to Sydney airport to say goodbye to my bro and his family as they head home to Norway?
Our rascally pup who I’m sitting next to, is an almost 1 yr old Golden Retriever called Benji (aka Le Benoit, pronounced Ben-wah). He is not terribly fond of the car however, so he is staring up at me with doughy eyes looking like he could barf all over my lap at any moment. Now don't be concerned. We aren't taking Benji to the airport with us. We'll be dropping him off at my brother-in-law's, where upon he will puke with excitement at seeing his best friend Mabel, another golden. He always has the best time with Mabel. The last time he saw her he puked 3 times (his highest praise), and when they ventured to the beach he ran straight into the water and took a dump. He's chock-full of character, to say the least.
Anyway, where was I? New to Substack, like writing, yadda yadda yadda. Now when I say I probably couldn't stick to one topic, it's just because of my silly personality... I like to blame it on the timing of my birth, which made me a Gemini. I get very obsessively into an interest, and then once I've done the thing once or twice, I get completely bored and move on to the next obsession. Trust me when I say that as annoying as that is for my parents, my family and even my friends, it is a thousand times worse for me as nobody ever seems quite able to keep up. Given that I am typing this on my phone, and that Substack posts can only be submitted on a browser, if you are reading this you will know my interest has lasted at least long enough for me to get home to my laptop.
I’m not 100% sure what I’ll write about yet, but as a Mum of 2 girls and a parent coach (I hate that title - that’s a whole post in and of itself) there will probably be a bit about parenting, but maybe also a spot of gardening, quilting, sewing, camping, reading, tv and just about whatever things come up that I feel like trying on any given day. Consistency (with anything) is not my forte, but I’ll attempt to shoot words out of my fingertips at least every week. If you care to follow along and see what comes your way, click some subscribe button that’s supposedly around here somewhere and let the internet magic do it’s thang. I trust you to find it, you’re a clever cookie.
One last thing. Benji did survive the road trip, and as predicted vomited almost on cue after seeing the lovely Mabel.
